This weeks topic: So this week’s topic is supposed to be Author’s we’ve met. However, I haven’t met enough authors to formulate a list for that topic. So instead I’m improvising a bit and instead will list authors who are still living that I’d love to meet. These authors have influenced my reading throughout my life. Their books have often pulled me out of reading slumps, or changed my thinking, or simply entertained me. Meeting them and being able to pick their brains on how they have created the worlds they have in their books would be incredibly awesome. That is, if I could get over my incredible shyness. It is also occuring to me while I curate this list that I tend to gravitate toward books by female authors.
Author: Stephen King
Growing up Stephen King was the household name for horror anything, from the books he wrote, to the screen adaptations of books and scripts he wrote. Rose Red, The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer, Storm of the Century, 1408 among my favourite screen adaptations made when I teenager. Carrie being my favourite from before I was born. For the horror genre I have read more Stephen King than I have anyone else, and while there are dozens of his books I still haven’t read. Meeting him though would be incredible. If only to get at least one of my books of his signed.
Author: Stephanie Garber
The first books by this author I ever read were the Caraval series. I had been in a reading slump and these books pulled me out of it. Her writing style, the story, the characters. The world she created just abosolutely amazing.
Author: Veronica Roth
Dystopian fantasy/Science fiction was huge when I was a teenager. So it is no surprise that her books shaped my reading journey. Divergent and its political commentary certainly made an impact. Making you question and challenge yourself and the world around you.
Author: Rebecca Yarros
Her worldbuilding is absolutely incredible. While I have only read the Fourth Wing series so far, I am hoping to branch into her romance novels eventually.
Author: Sarah Beth Durst
I have only just recently discovered this author but I have read four of her books so far, the first three books in her The Spellshop series, and The Faraway Inn. She has written many others which I hope to read eventually. She has been my entry into the modern cozy fantasy genre.
Author: Victoria Aveyard
Her Red Queen series pulled me out of a reading slump. Her world building pulled me in and her story kept me wanting to find out more. I still have to read her Realm Breaker series and I’m also very much looking forward to her next novel Tempest, which is an adult fantasy.
Author: Kelley Armstrong
Kelley Armstrong has been a staple in my reading journey from when I was a teenager starting with her The Darkest Powers series to the most recent series of hers I’ve been reading A Rip Through Time and so many inbetween. Spanning a multitude of genres like crime, horror, romance but mainly fantasy. There has not been a book she has written that I did not enjoy. I have so many of her books I still have to read.
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Her series ACOTAR was my introduction to Adult Fantasy. I went in reading the first book in the series not knowing that. I just saw a “Beauty and the Beast” retelling and itw as like sign me up! I have throughly enjoyed this series and have since read everything she has published and am incredibly excited for the next installments of the ACOTAR series. I had watched bits of the podcast she did where she talks about her world-building and how nothing was exactly pre-planned, when she was in the zone the story went the direction the characters were making it go. Which when you consider the interconnection of each of her worlds in Throne of Glass, ACOTAR, and Crescent City is incredibly interesting.
Author: Cassandra Clare
The Mortal Instruments series was among the first fantasy book series I picked up as a teenager. It was the first series I started reading before any visual media was planned for it. I fell in love with this story and the world they were in. If we are being honest, Jace was probably my first of what we would call book boyfriends. How she created the universe in this series, and it’s multiple sequel series is something I would love to talk to her about.
Author: Suzanne Collins
Much like Veronica Roth’s Divergent series. Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games shaped my teenage years. A re-read of them as an adult made me appreciate them even more, and I picked up on a lot more things that teenager me wouldn’t have even thought about. The paralells I’m seeing in our reality now, with the rise of what feels like dicatorships forming in the world, in places I would never have guessed would occur. What served as her inspiration or base point for the world she created in The Hunger games, would be something I’d want to ask her.
